Light Art Museum, Unna, Germany

Last week I was invited to visit the main factory of luminaire manufacturer Bega, located just outside Dusseldorf in Germany. After the amazingly awesome geekfest that was a tour of the heavy engineering factory floor we visited the nearby town of Unna, which is home to a fantastic light art museum, built into the underground vaults of an old brewery (
Lichtkunst Unna). This small backwater town in rural Germany had somehow managed to accumulate site-specific works by Joseph Kosuth, Olafur Eliasson, Keith Sonnier, James Turrell and many others. Turrell had a couple of pieces there, including a skyspace that we were lucky enough to be inside at nightfall. My vocabulary isn't good enough to describe the feeling of complete and utter amazement that was shared by all during that quite half hour. The guy is a genius.
